To Hell with you
Words by Matthew Yates

Going to Hell is normally associated with roasting forever in a pit of fire and brimstone.

Luckily, there's another Hell that people willingly flock to.

Grand Cayman's version is open air and quaint. Consisting of startlingly eerie looking jagged rocks and a fire-red gift shop, Hell in West Bay is more like a little slice of heaven.

According to Ivan Farrington, proprietor of Hell, the place gets its name according to its mass of sharp, grey limestone and dolomite rocks. Local folklore has it that some nights the area is haunted by ghost-like figures, known throughout the Caribbean as "duppies".

Another tale is that in the 1930's, an English dignitary tried to shoot a bird among the rocks. When he missed and said "oh hell", inadvertently giving the formation its diabolical name.

Mr. Farrington also dresses up as the Devil most days. Complete with a red cape, horns and a pitchfork, he's greets visitors with a cheery "How the hell are you?" and is happy to pose for pictures brandishing his trusty pitchfork.

Cayman's unique version of the underworld has the amenities to make your trip a good one. There's ample parking for those dying to visit, a boardwalk shaded from the blazing heat by local trees and a devilishly different gift shop.

In fact, the store carries all sorts of novelty/souvenir items to carry back with you into the world of the living.

Check out the "Hot as Hell" mugs, t-shirts and other apparel. And of course, no trip to Hell, no matter how brief - this time - would be complete without sending friends and family a cheery hello from Hell. And like most of the gifts there, the cards go from mild to wild. Some just have photos and a short description of Hell's history while others are more risqué.

Going to Hell and back is easy. Travel up the West Bay Road into West Bay and head straight across at the four-way stop by Centennial Towers. Continue along Town Hall Road until you see the sign pointing to Hell on your left. Make that turn and head straight until you get to the large sign by the roadside that reads "Devil's Hangout."

Next time you're in West Bay, do yourself a favour and go to Hell.
